What Causes Missed Period Along With Weight Loss Despite Having Negative UPT?

default
Posted on Thu, 28 May 2015
Question: I had my period for 3 days on March 11, 2015, then it stopped completely. Then two weeks later, on March 28 it came back for a full 7 days. Now i'm 9 days late. I did experience great weight loss in the month of April. I did a urine test at the hospital yesterday, May 3 and the test for a UTI and pregnancy came back negative. What could be wrong?

Brief Answer:
This recent irregularity in your cycles is due to the weight loss you had.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to Healthcare magic. I am Dr Ramadevi wani. I will be answering your concerns today.
Did you have regular cycles before? If so then this recent irregularity in your cycles is due to the weight loss you had in the month of April. Sudden weight loss, physical and mental stress can all cause hormonal imbalance resulting in irregular cycles.
I suggest for you to wait for another week. If you do not get your periods by then, do a blood pregnancy test as it is more sensitive and reliable than urine pregnancy test. If that is negative consult your doctor and take Progesterone for withdrawal bleeding.
Regular cycles should return in due course of time. Keep a record of your menstrual cycles for the next six months. If they are still irregular then you need to consult your doctor for further evaluation ( thyroid test, pelvic ultrasound).

I hope this helps. If you have any further queries, do write to me through Healthcare Magic. I will be happy to answer.

Thank you very much for your answer. I am now 12 days late and have been trying my best to get onto a regular routine, sleeping at the same time and eating better meals. It's been 4 days since I took the urine test. I will wait a few more days before I go for a blood test, however I'm quite positive I'm not pregnant. It is quite difficult to get a family doctor here so I am very appreciative of your quick answer.
Best.

Brief Answer:
If it is bothering you, do the blood pregnancy test today.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.

I am happy to hear that you are getting back to good habits.
I am also confident that this delay in your period is due to sudden weight reduction. I asked you to repeat the pregnancy test after one week hoping that you may start your period naturally during this time.
If it is bothering you, you may do the blood pregnancy test today. If negative ( in all probability it will be negative) take progesterone for withdrawal bleeding

I hope this helps. if you have any further queries, do write to me through Healthcare magic. i will be happy to answer.
