What Causes Mild Vaginal Spotting?

default
Posted on Fri, 10 Oct 2014
Question: Hello,

My menstruation was suppose to start on the September 15, 2014. My last cycle was August 20, 2014. Today after I had a bowel movement I wiped and there was a spot of blood on the tissue mixed with mucus. A few hours later I used the bathroom again (urinated) and there was a drop of blood in the toilet. A normal cycle for me would be heavy bleeding immediately followed by severe cramping on day one. I am experiencing slight cramping, however it isn't unbearable just uncomfortable

Brief Answer:
Pregnancy is a possibility.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The mild spotting that you are having can be due to several things. Maybe your next period has set in or we are probably looking at an abortion ( we'll have to confirm a pregnancy for that) or it could be just due to some local trauma.
The other symptoms could be due to pregnancy or due to just a premenstrual phase.
Here's what you should be doing in this order
a. If you do not get your period, please do a urine pregnancy test at home 1 week after the day you should have started your period. So as per dates, you should be doing the test on 22nd September. If you want to know earlier, see a physician and get a serum beta hCG done for yourself. This is a blood test and will pick up the pregnancy sooner.
If this is positive, I would suggest that a transvaginal ultrasound scan be done at 6 weeks.
b. If you do get your period, it could be due to the beginning of your next period or due to local trauma ( which may be sustained during intercourse).

Also, keep the stress levels down, have a healthy and balanced diet and do not engage in any vigorous activity.
Till we get your pregnancy test, please avoid any type of Xrays, or drugs ( including medication) Continue self monitoring the bleeding till then.
Let me know if you have any more concerns.
Wishing you good health.
Regards.

Brief Answer:
You can get it done now.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
You can get the blood test done now also. It is a sensitive test and becomes positive even at 12-15 days after ovulation.
Hope my answer is helpful.
