What Causes Left-sided Dull Headache, Worsening Vision, Fatigue And Sore Joints?

default
Posted on Wed, 7 Oct 2015
Question: I am a 24 year old woman, who has been experiencing ongoing worsening symptomolgy over the past year. These include dull headaches on the left side of the head (very uncommon for me), worsening vision (I now have prescription glasses), extreme fatigue (I cannot seem to climb a few stairs without getting extremely tired , anemia), very sore joints (especially the left side of my jaw, which tends to click/lock) and persistent infections on my scalp and thrush. My GP thought at first depression and anxiety, which I was prescribed numerous anti-depressants which did not seem to help. I am concerned I could have chronic leukaemia - though I am young, these symptoms are very disconcerting - considering I am getting sicker. However, the GP proclaimed I am "too beautiful to be sick"and I would "look" sicker if it was anything worse (such as cancer) though I think this is highly unprofessional. I can hardly go to see friends and university without getting exhausted, and people around me have noticed how pale and run-down I now am. Could it possibly be cancer, and should I get tested?

Brief Answer:
Blood tests should rule out chronic leukemia

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

These symptoms at least merit basic investigations to rule out a chronic condition. Chronic leukemia is one of them though that is not a priority in your age.

I see that you have got blood tests done. What are the results show? Normal blood tests exclude chronic leukemia.

Because of the persistent headache and worsening vision, I would also consider getting a neuro opinion and getting an MRI done. For the sore joints, thrush, etc, an autoimmune panel. That would do the job for now.

Hope this helps. I will be available to answer further follow up queries, if any.

The GP said that I had very low iron levels, but I am not sure what the GP was testing for initially in the blood count - she did not suggest anything for WBC levels. Can I be assured that this isn't chronic leukaemia?

Yes, I have also been referred to a neurologist for the headaches. Now it is the concern of brain cancer (which to me, is more worrying than the latter) since this all begun when I had such severe headaches once when driving, that I had to pull over because I was having trouble with my memory.
The headaches are quite severe when they happen, usually I cannot eat/nausea and they have woken me up in sleep before. Does this raise concern?

Brief Answer:
headache merits further testing

Detailed Answer:
Headache has got many causes like eye problems, sinusitis and obviously brain problems. But it still needs testing. May not be brain tumor after all.

You should get wbc total and differential count. That should exclude leukemia.

Thank you for your advice! Is a WBC total and differential count different from a standard CBC from the GP? Would I be able to ask for this from the neurologist while I am there?

Brief Answer:
WBC is included in CBC

Detailed Answer:
WBC should be included in CBC but you specifically said "I am not sure what the GP was testing for initially in the blood count - she did not suggest anything for WBC levels". That's why I mentioned it separately. If it is already done then send me the report. I can check it.
