What Causes Itching Whole Over The Body?
More information is needed- kindly asked to answer the following questions
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for asking at healthcaremagic.
I read your question and understand that this can be very distressing and concerning.
Itchiness can be caused by several causes and it is very important for us to know a little more on it.
Do you have any skin rash or lesions at the areas that are itchy?
Do you have any chronic conditions or take medications regularly?
Any other complaint other than the itchiness?
How is your energy level, appetite, any fever?
Anyone else that lives with have has similar symptoms?
Please let me know of the above information and if you have a skin rash please upload a picture or two to help us understand the cause of it.
Kind regards,
Antoneta Zotaj, MD
I have some nausea and fatigue. Sometimes chills. No one else in our household has similar symptoms.
Some advises and recommended examinations
Detailed Answer:
Hello again,
Thank you for the reply and for the information provided.
As i see you have not mentioned you have any skin rash or lesions so the itchiness happens without clear skin reasons. Lack of rash makes infection unlikely as the cause of it and the fact that no one else at home has similar problem is reassuring for this. Eczema and dermatitis in also not likely if you have no skin lesions.
It would be helpful to know what are the names of the medications you use as some medications might cause itchiness even though they did not cause you any problems before. Zoloft seems to not be a cause of itchiness.
When patients have itchiness without clear skin reasons there are few main things we consider:
1. dry skin
2. liver
3. other chronic conditions and use of medications
So I would say:
- Make sure you keep your skin hydrated. Avoid long frequent baths with hot water and use mild shampoos or soaps, and after showers make sure you use some after bath lotions (even just pertollium or vaseline) to keep your skin hydrated. Apply these all over your body once a day at least.
- Notice if any cosmetic products might be causing you to have itchiness also- use just simple hydrating products without color and no odor.
- Try to take some antihistamine at night (cetirizine 10 mg) and see if it is helpful- this would help with itchiness due to allergies.
- Knowing your blood pressure medications is needed to make sure it is not due to your medications.
- If no allergies identified, BP medications do not seem to be the cause of it and you are keeping your skin hydrated and still have the itchiness than some routine tests might be recommended: bilirubine, ALT, AST, alkaline phosphatase, TSH, CBC, ERS, Creatinine, sugar and lipid check, urinalysis.
- If all these are normal than your doctor might decide of other tests that try to identify very rare conditions.
I hope this is helpful and answers to your questions but please feel free to reply if anymore clarification is needed on this.
