What Causes Irregular Periods In A 51 Year Old?

default
Posted on Mon, 7 Sep 2015
Question: Thank you Dr. Rynne. I am 51 years old and pretty healthy. According to my OB/GYN, because I am still having monthly periods regularly, I am not yet in perimenopause. However, this morning, I got my period again after just having it two weeks ago. Is this something I should be concerned about. I have always been petite and slender, but in the last year have gained about 15 pounds and have not changed my eating or exercise habits. In fact, I know track the number of steps I take each day, and it averages between 8 and 10 miles. Should I be concerned?

Brief Answer:
The bleeding you have is most likely due to hormonal imbalance.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to Healthcare Magic.
I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns today.

The bleeding you have is most likely due to hormonal imbalance. Though you have regular monthly periods, you are in the perimenopause. As the ovarian reserve of eggs is declining there will be hormonal imbalances occurring around this age. This can cause such bleeding. The weight gain also can cause hormonal imbalance.

At present just get your thyroid hormone checked. One reason for such weight gain can be thyroid hormone deficiency.

In my opinion this bleeding is not of concern now. Let us wait and see how and when your next period will be. If the period keeps coming frequently, then you need to consult Gynecologist to find out if there is any other cause like endometrial polyp.

I hope this helps.
If you have further concerns, I will be happy to answer.
