What Causes Intermittent Nausea, Dizziness And Leg Weakness?

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Mar 2015
Question: My 15 year old son has been having intermittent nausea and not so much dizziness as leg weakness. Initially (before the nausea and weakness) he had a dull pain in his left side but said it only hurt when he twisted. At first we thought muscle pull as it is right at the base of his ribs and he has been doing a push up and sit up challenge. The nausea and weakness started the following day. This is the fourth day and he said laying down two nights running he has had trouble sleeping due to sharp pains in his back. Up and about there is a pain now in his right side when twisting or pushing right at tge base of the ribcage. He says it is not getting worse but also not getting better. No fever, no vomiting but a general feeling of malaise.

Brief Answer:
Could be due to low potassium levels.

Detailed Answer:
HI

Greetings from Dr.Divakara.P
Thanks for posting your query.

The pain could be due to one of the following reasons.

1. Radiculopathy : Is a condition where the nerve supplying the muscles of back and chest gets compressed between the back bones causing pain in the back muscles.

2. Kidney Infection or Stones in Kidney : Can causes pain , nausea and weakness.

3. Infection : Causes Muscular pain and weakness but usually associated with Fever but need to always be present.

4. Low levels of Potassium : Could happen due to dehydration or some hormonal problems.

Among these I am more in favour of Low Potassium and Radiculopathy. I advise him to get Serum Potassium levels, X ray Thoracic spine and Ultrasound Abdomen pelvis scan done and revert back .

You mentioned about weakness in leg . I need to know more about it .

Is the weakness present in both the legs or in one leg ?
In doing what activities using leg he notices the weakness? For example in getting up from sitting or squatting position of holding on to his slippers ?

Kindly revert back with details asked and test reports.

Regards.
