Posted on Wed, 9 Jul 2014
Question: i am a crack cocane user.

Reciently when i take a hit of crack i experience hearburn like pain on the right side of my chest.
it goes away after about 20 mins
im not really looking for a lexure telling me that its bad to use i just want an explanation on what could be causing the pain

while off of the substance i have visited the er without the chest pain
\
they did ekg etc said my heart was very healthy

when i use crack i also use atenolol 25mg and xanax .5 and norvasc10mg

i do confirm i get normal acid reflux during times of using crack but i use otc remedies as well as baking soda drinks thich eliminate those feelings

this heartburn is unaffected by the reflux remedies

sorry for keeping adding so many comments

but i would appreciate the explanation of the phenomenon as even if i didnt use i know many who do and your explanation could save someones life if not myown.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir
Historically there are more than one possibility of the heartburn like pain you perceived by smoking Crack cocaine. It is typically seen that those who smoke cocaine develop symptoms pertaining to upper one-third of gastro-intestinal tract. The most common mechanism has been proposed as decreased blood supply to the gut. This happens because of intense constriction of the blood vessel supplying the gut. This typically happens about one hour after the smoking.
Other possible mechanism may be gastritis and reflux into esophagus. Since you are taking a number of other medication along with cocaine, they may also cause hyperacidity and reflux. At times refulx may not respond easily to baking soda etc.
One more possibility is cardiac pain. The pain may be perceived as burning sensation and can be felt on right side. The mechanism again is spasm of coronary arteries. This however usually requires medical attention and may not go on its own. Other associated symptoms may be shortness of breath, nausea, sweating etc.
