What Causes Fever, High BP, Cough, Swollen Neck And Thyroid Glands?

Question: I went to the doctor today to get results of my recent blood work. Blood work due to feeling extremely tired, musle pain, not being able to sleep. My body got into this and I thought I was going through menopause. Blood count for hormones by my gynecologist came back normal (no menopause). The general doctor then ordered other tests. They all came back ok. Today at the office, the nurse tells me I have a fever and my blood pressure is high compared to my normal blood pressure. I have been coughing and I feel like if the front of my neck is a little bit swollen. Asked the doctor to examine my neck and said feels the left side swolen where my thiroid is. She is suspecting thyroiditis. Sent for more blood work and xrays of the chest for cough and ultrasound of the thyroid. I am scared. I am a teacher. All my kids have been sick with bad flus lately but I do not have any symptoms. I do not even feel bad. Did not suspect I had a fever of a high blood pressure. What might be going on with me?

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

Fever and elevated blood pressure can certainly be caused by thyroiditis. The good news is that this is generally a self-limited disease than can be quickly improved with steroids. The results of the ultrasound will confirm this. With treatment, you will be completely fine, and there are generally no long term effects from a thyroid flare. Don't worry!

Are the symptoms described in my earlier email linked to thyroiditis. my body was recently in shock for about a week. I had symptoms that included insomnia, body aches, lethargy, tiredness. I am feeling better now. Went back to sleep with some natural pills and my body aches have subsided. However, it has been a week since I have been feeling tightness in the part of ny neck where my thyroid is and it bothers a little bit when I swallow.

Detailed Answer:
I believe the correct course of action is to obtain an ultrasound of the thyroid. This will provide a complete and thorough diagnosis. This is the definitive gold standard test. Once you have these results, I'm sure you will feel reassured.
