Posted on Mon, 17 Oct 2016
Question: My throat started hurting day after oral sex. It has been going on for a month. My symptoms include occasional fever, burning sensation in back of throat, dry throat. No cough, no pain swallowing, no difficulty swallowing. I had a strep test done- negative. Mono- negative. STD (gonnorhea, chylimidia-negative). Not taking any mediation. Not sure what this could be.

Brief Answer:
You are having an infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Fever and pain are signs of an infection and you are likely to be having one.

The picture sent by you shows redness at the back of your throat, which again can be due to an infection.

Many times the bacteria causing the infection especially after oral sex may not be detected on the routine tests which you have done.

The best thing would be to meet a doctor, who will take a throat swab for microbial culture and guide on further need for any antibiotics.

In the meantime I would like you to start gargling with chlorhexidine gargles thrice a day and take paracetamol 500mg 2 to 3 times a day for the fever.

Take care

What type of gargle is that? Also, what throat test should I ask for? They did mono, strep and std test on me and all came back negative. Is this normal to be going on for three weeks? Also, being that my tonsils are removed, is it normal to have little white pus pockets in the tonsil area? These haven't gone away at all yet, its been three weeks.

Brief Answer:
It is not normal and is a sign of infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello

It is a antiseptic gargle and will reduce the infection.

Please ask for a throat swab, this different from the other tests you have done and can exactly tell which bacteria are growing.

Pus pockets are not normal and are a sign of infection, therefore I asked you for the test and to meet your doctor.

You will need a course of antibiotics, don't you will be fine.

Take care
