What Causes Discomfort In Mid Right Back Along With Discomfort During Urination?

default
Posted on Wed, 14 Oct 2015
Question: having weird feeling when urinating like a little more urgent. attaching pic of urinalyis from hour ago - have some mild discomfort in mid right back area as a result doc prescribed keflex for 7 days - culture won't be back till Monday. Normal urine results / blood work (kidney function etc) done 2 weeks ago. Could i have kidney infection with these labs? don't want to take meds unnecessarily (also no fever, on last day or so of period). what does the stuff on the lines mean that are flaggedl? doc said these results "wouldnt raise an eyebrow but could still have infection" been drinking lots of cranberry juice. could I wait for results or would that be risky? filled meds just in case..thank you!

Brief Answer:
Do an ultrasound scan of abdomen.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX and welcome to HCM.
As an Urologist, i can fully understand your concern.
Assuming your kidney function reports are normal( no report seen),and having gone through your urine routine report, the culture can show infection.
As only one day gap is there,if you're not having burning urination, or fever, you can very well wait, till the culture report is available.
But to know the cause of the right sided flank pain, you should get an ultrasound scan of abdomen done.
That will give an idea, if there's any cause for the pain in the flank.
If scan and culture reports are normal, you can forget the pain and the infection.
Hope you feel better and relieved.

thank you for replying. pain is gone, no fever, no burning... ended up having a yeast infection (I think according to OTC test) and took diflucan. what do the flags indicate on the urine test? doc asked if I was drinking more and I am and then asked if I was still on period etc. am calling my doc in morning but am wondering if this is anything to worry about? the LRG and the flag A on the blood line has me a bit freaked out. Think caused by period (also I wasn't aware I was supposed to "clean catch" or something till I got home)... they just handed me a cup and told me to leave sample. and the L on the specific gravity line... is that from drinking more water and cranberry juice? thank you for your help. :-)

Brief Answer:
Repeat urine tests one week after periods.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.
The urine test flags can be ignored for the time being.
Complete the course of Diflucan, which should take care of your fungal infection.
Remember to do the urine tests, one week after periods.
Ignore the specific gravity line also.
Taking fluids more than 10 glasses daily, may make dilute urine and lower specific gravity. Drinking less than 6 glasses fluids daily, will increase specific gravity.
The urine will be dark yellow, with low intake of fluids, and vice versa.
Hope your doubts are cleared.

last follow-up question, I think. do you think the blood is from period? does the LRG mean large amount? am a bit wigged out - I googled, I know, I know and now worried about it being something bad ie cancer! but was actively lighlty bleeding right (at the last time I used potty before test) before test didn't think to use tampon or anything before test. don't smoke, don't drink, no family history, one uti 20 years ago, age 45. do I need another test in a week? or just next time I need test make sure its not during period? of course cant call doc office till tomorrow. last normal urine test was about 2 - e weeks ago. thanks again for your help.

Brief Answer:
All urine tests are done one week after periods stop.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again.
You should know best, if blood is from periods.
All Urologists usually advise patients, to check urine, one week after periods stop.
This is to ensure,no contamination from periods blood.
Hope you've understood well.

Brief Answer:
urine culture taken without contamination.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again.
No need to be confused/ anxious.
Just ensure your urine collects into a bottle / container, provided by lab.
If you feel there's some contamination, that bottle shouldn't be given for culture.
You can always ask for another specimen bottle.
It's actually a routine test, that millions world over are doing.
Wish you well.
