What Causes Cough With Excessive Yellow Mucus When Diagnosed With Bladder Infection?

Posted on Tue, 25 Aug 2015
Question: Hello,
My daughter was diagnosed with bladder infection a week ago and has been taking antibiotic called trimethoprim . She finished her course two days ago. She felt better but not fully ok. During the time of bladder infection she also developed chesty cough and was blowing her nose with loads of yellow mucous .
As the week progressed she felt better but still had chesty cough and runny nose.
Today she developed high temperature and body ache. She was shivering and very tearful. She has some lower back pain. I have a feeling that she has a kidney infection. What medication are for that and how we can test the kidneys.

Considerations

Detailed Answer:
hello and thank you for sending the question.

I agree with your concern that she may have a persistent bladder infection. It is possible that the antibiotic was not powerful enough to eliminate the bacteria that was causing the original infection. It is important that she obtained a culture of the year in which will allow the laboratory to specify which antibiotic would be more effective to eliminate her symptoms.

I would suggest that you go to the local primary care physicianto request a urinalysis with culture. The doctor can then determine which antibiotic is most appropriate and prescribe that for her. If she develops fevers or shaking chills this would be reason to bring her to the emergency department for evaluation.

Thanks again for sending your question.

sincerely,
