Question: my new born baby ( born on 17 July 2015) had motioned only a single time in early morning at 4:00 am also he is consuming less mothers milk than yesterday. Is he facing some problem ? How can we check? on his 1st day he was kept in nursery by doctor urging to give c-pipe for better opening of lungs and providing oxygen. then at late night on 1st day they also had provided him feeding through pipe giving him some forex or like that powdered milk mix in water. After discharge from nursery on next day he was consuming mothers milk properly. And during that time he was getting a proper motion . Today from almost 16 hours he had not motioned yet and also consuming less mothers milk, not even for 5 minutes .what we have to do?

Brief Answer:
It is normal for a child to pass stool once in a few days.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Congratulation on having a baby. Let me assure you that in case of newborns, mother's milk is the best possible feed. Hence, I would recommend exclusive breast feeding. If the child gets only breast fed, you need not worry about anything else. The breast milk production would automatically increase if the child demands more feed. The adequacy of feeds would be manifested by the number of times urine is passed. If the child passes more urine more than 6 times over a period of 24 hours, you can assume that the child is getting adequate feeds. Whether the child passes stool 10 times a day or once in 10 days you need not worry as both of them are normal. The only cause of worry would be hard and pellet like stool.

Lethargy is the sign to look out for. If the child becomes lethargic, you would have to rush him to a hospital. But if that is not the case and if the urinary output is ok, you can assume that things are fine. In case the urinary output is reduced, all you need to do is to give increased amount of breast feeding

CPAP (not C-pipe) is a form of respiratory support given to newborns in case there is some respiratory distress. It can be assumed that the distress and problems had settled and hence the child was discharged. You need not worry about that.

Hope that helps.

Brief Answer:
It is normal. No interventions required.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. I have checked the attached image. The rashes are called erythema toxicum. They are harmless rashes that can occur in newborns and usually disappear by 15 days but may remain for 3 months. Nothing needs to be done about it.

Brief Answer:
The skin colour will help you in assessing jaundice

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

The fetus, before birth, has hemoglobin levels higher than the mother since he has to extract oxygen from the mother's blood. After birth this extra hemoglobin is no more required and hence it breaks down to bilirubin which causes jaundice. It is normal for jaundice to occur around 3-4 days of age. Jaundice will be apparent if the skin looks yellow. It can be confirmed with a blood test. It is only if higher than a certain level (specific for age and birth weight) that phototherapy needs to be given, but nothing otherwise.

You need not apply oil while massaging the baby. Rather, gentle non-repeatitive stoking (tactile stimulation) needs to be done daily. It will help in the child's development. it is slightly different from what we call massaging.
