Brief Answer:
Multi approach treatement

Detailed Answer:
Dear sir , I have gone through your question and I understand your concerns.. Treatement to degenerative disc disease and subsequent nerve damage is a multi approach treatement that consists of a medical treatment for pain management such as lyrica and oxycodone ( the medications you have been taking) accompanied with other approaches..
These approaches include :
1) Excersice which increase endorphins secreation and help limit the painful stimuli.. , it should be done under the supervision of a physical therapist in a gradually increasing manner
2) life style modifications such as cutting on alcohol , avoid staying in one position for more that 20 minutes and stretching excersices
3) epidural injections which injects steroids around the vertebrae to decrease inflammation and subsequently decrease the pain
4) transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation which alters the way your body perceive fever painful stimulus .. leading to decreased pain senasation..
5) surgery either by fixing vertebrea together or by an artificial disc but these surgical solutions are extensive and patients are always advised to resorte surgery as a last option..
If you are planning for excersice and physiotherapy then you should consult a physiotherapist ..
if you are planning for an epidural injection or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation then you should consult a pain management specialist ..
if you are planning for surgery , then you should consult an orthopedic surgeon or a neurosurgeon.. I hope you find this helpful

I am interested in beginning an exercise program. I used to exercise regularly, but I started to find that it made the pain worse, in particular the lower leg and back pain, and also, directly or indirectly, increased the depression. There may be some type of fibromyalgia-type disorder as well.

Brief Answer:
Controlled gradually progressive excersices

Detailed Answer:
Dear sir, I would not recommend that you start n excersice program on your own and I strongly recommend a controlled gradually progressive excersice program under the supervision of a physiotherapist..
This program should consist of stretching excersice that will cause a better range of movement and a deceased pain but you need to know that stretching may take a few months to improve the pain ..
I would also recommend you add stabilizing excersices which acts to empower the muscles of you back .. powerful muscles can counteract the effect of degenerated discs providing a better stabilization of your spinal column.. I hope you find this helpful.
