What Causes Constant One-sided Sore Throat Years After Treating GERD?

default
Posted on Mon, 19 Jan 2015
Question: I was diagnosed with GERD several years ago. At the time the symptoms were heartburn and mainly throat pain. After two years on Omeprazole, the throat pain is back mainly on right side, under the lymph node. Nothing seems to help. Halls will soothe the pain for a few minutes only. It was suggested that I have LPR since the throat pain is only when upright. At night, it seems to go away. It has been a month with this constant one-side sore throat -- sometimes both sides, but mostly one side. No cough; hoarseness is only when the sore throat is at its worse.

hi

Detailed Answer:
considering that you have persisten symptoms refracter to standard therapy, you should do barium swallow test to verify is there hiatal hernia or some other stomach motility disorder beside gerd. You should also avoid irritating food and drinks, smoking, coffee, avoid sitting after meal, sleep with elevated upper body. But as I said, i thing that baris swallow should be done and gastroscopy as well. then further manegment can be planned. Wish you good health. Regards

Thanks for your prompt response. My abdominal discomfort has been cleared by the medications. The constant discomfort now is limited to the throat, and it occurs only when upright, not when in bed. This is why I was told that it could be "silent reflux." My difficulty is that the throat pain remains despite all medication. Is there a chance of throat cancer? There is seldom hoarseness, except when the throat is at its worse. Also, no discernible swelling on the neck.

hi

Detailed Answer:
throat cancer is not likely to be unless you excessively drink alcohol or smoke. GERD is known to cause throat symptoms such as pain, swallowing difficulties, feeling of lump in throat etc. however, all this should be confirmed with tests taht I ve mentioned. GERD is causing higher acid levels which may travel all the way to mouth and cause symptoms that you re describing. Some more serious diagnoses are rare and include mediastinal tumors that compress esophagus, esophageal stricture or stenosis.
