Posted on Fri, 29 May 2015
Question: Was taking an allergy pill to try to clear up sinuses. After 2 days started getting very dry mouth and stopped taking it. Never have taken it before. A few days after that felt like I had burned my tongue and my gums were slightly irritated. Also a few raised taste buds near the back of the tongue and tongue was filmy but that is getting a little better

Brief Answer:
Can be aphthous ulcers.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking HCM.

I have gone through your query. Your problem can be most likely aphthous ulcers. If you send a picture of it then it will be more helpful.

Oral hygiene is important. You can do warm saline mouth wash. Applying gels containing choline salicylate or corticosteroid like triamcinolone mouth paste will be helpful.
Taking B complex and vitamin C is advised also as this condition can occur from deficiency of such vitamins.
Usually this will resolve in in 1 week.
If there is no improvement then you may need antibiotics.

Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.

I brush and flush at least once a day and often 2. I just looked on the bottle of OTC allergy medicine and it expired last year(UGH!). Also I was wondering if it was Thrush. Would antifungal mouthwash be helpful? What gels contain the above mentioned ingredients ?

In thrush there will be white plaque like appearance. It is also painless. In such condition antifungal mouth wash or cream may help.
From your mentioned symptoms it can be most likely aphthous ulcer. Zytee RB gel is one of the brand which contain choline salicylate. You can use that.

I also forgot to mention that my palate is somewhat sensitive and the inner part of my lips feel chapped. I apologize for not remembering to mention those symptoms as well. I forgot about them until I ate supper. Sorry for the extra work. Also thank you for your help.

Brief Answer:
Vitamin deficiencies this can occur.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome again.

Thank you for your follow up.

Vitamin B complex and vitamin c deficiencies can give the symptoms you mentioned. Vitamin B12 deficiency gives the sensitive feeling especially.
Taking supplements of those will be helpful in such case also. B complex and Vitamin c will cover all these. There are supplements with combination of these.
So you can take these supplements along with application of gel i mentioned.

Wishing you a faster healing. Let me know if you have any further queries.
Don't hesitate to ask. I am happy to help you.
Thanks.
