What Causes Burning And Tingling Sensation In Limbs When Diagnosed With Mononucleosis?

default
Posted on Thu, 2 Jul 2015
Question: My wife was diagnosed with Mononucleosis about two months ago. I have been feeling not myself for the same period. I have been working tiredly for three weeks up to 75hrs a week. I slipped and fell and bruised my hip badly 4 days ago. It is quite swollen and black, yellow. and blue. The last couple of days I have been working a lot and in the heat. Now I am having incredible burning and tingling sensations on my legs, feet, arms, hands and face. It is very uncomfortable. Could this fall or mono and working in the heat be the cause? I also had a bad shingles outbreak less than one month ago. I just feel like my body is not right. This burning sensation all over has me more worried than being so exhausted all the time. I started to notice the burning sensation two days ago which started in my feet and legs. Now it is all over and seems to be getting worse. I don't understand.

Detailed Answer:
HI XXXX,
Thanks for the query under HCM forum.
It seems you are going through lot of stressful /confusing condition these days.
I understand your concern.
* Your basic problem at present seems to be burning all over body without any skin rash, following a fall with severe injury to your hip . You also have other predisposing factors like shingles infection , exposure to heat, exposure to infectious mononucleosis .Let us think of them one by one as a possible cause of the trouble.
- Infectious mononucleosis is characterized by enlargement of throat glands with pharyngitis, fever, sore throat. It does not have burning skin as a typical symptom.
- Shingale - It is a viral infection, involving a nerve along it's course so the burning/ skin rash is restricted to the skin supplied by the nerve involved. It is usually single sided.
- Exposure to heat- The skin exposed to heat has typical red rash with pappules associated by itching irritated skin. The involvement of skin is typically in skin creases ( elbow, breast, scrotum & the skin folds or where ever there is friction between body & clothes. Burning is not a typical symptom here.
* From above facts the possible cause seems to be different than the above ones . Burning skin is essentially a condition with nerve involvements. It can be
- local nerve involvement - Trauma Sciatica, carpel tunnel syndrome, tarsal tunnel syndrome), severe soft tissue injury to skin after the fall.
- Peripheral neuropathy ( in systemic conditions like Diabetes/ B 12 deficiency)
- injury to spine causing compression on nerve roots arising from spinal canal. ( due to jerks during the fall )
- This can be psychological stress
* Taking into consideration the vigorous fall you had & also that the symptom started from the feet -- I think your fall seems to be the cause for the burning.
* To pin point the cause you should consult your family physician first. He will examine you completely for your trauma due to fall & treat you or refer you to a physician/ orthopedic surgeon for expert advise if he thinks it to be needful.
* You will have to get investigated with- Glucose tolerance test, serum vitaminB12, X ray / CT scan/ MRI of complete spine to locate any disc or vertebral problem .
* The treatment would be cause specific.B12 supplements, physiotherapy, surgery,Control of diabetes.
* Home care- Till you get all the things evaluated-you can start with
- Take rest, avoid laborious body movements.
- Be in a cool atmosphere/ avoid exposure to heat, hot water bath,
- Apply caladryl lotion to skin
- Take lot of fresh water/ fresh juices,Vitamin B12 pills ( over the counter)
- Be positive & stress less. This problem is going to be relieved after proper diagnosis & specific treatment.
I hope, the answer is informative & useful to you. Any follow up query is welcome
