Shingles is another name for vericella zoster viral infection(also called "zona") which is latent inside after the initial infection with Chickenpox,in childhood. In elderly/adolescents once the virus is activated either by immunity or any drug it appears clinically as rash, typically along the nerve path beneath the skin with rash.

Questions and answers on "Shingles"

Hello:

I am 46 yrs old and believe I have the shingles.. I have viewed pictures of the disease online and compared them and the pain to what I experienced a few months ago.. Can I get the vaccine for it or is it to late?? I do have healthcare coverage. My kids at home have not had the chicken pots so I am worried and want to protect them as we'll as heal myself.

doctor1 MD

Even if you have had shingles in the past you may still receive the vaccine for shingles from your doctor. The vaccine protects you but really does not have much bearing on protecting your kids since catching chickenpox from a person with shingles is pretty uncommon. You children should receive...

doctor1 MD

Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
I am suspecting herpes zoster (shingles) in your case. You are right that shingles is a reactivation of chicken pox which usually occurs in childhood.
This is caused by a virus which remains latent or hidden in the body and gets reactivated when the persons immunity gets low...

They are in his ear, the side of his face has been very swollen and very painful. Now there is a bloody dishcharge and is having trouble hearing out of the ear. Should we go back and seek medical treatment?

doctor1 MD

Hi,

Hi my dad fell and theres a huge swelling in the middle of his back even covering the spine area - it is huge - bigger than my entire hand. I put ice on it but it seems to be getting bigger and bruising - theres no pain though. he has recently been quite ill with post shingles pain in right arm. he also had a catheter for over a month which caused infection and is also a dialysis patient - also has history of aneurism of the aorta. Hes quite a strong soldier. Very weak after the infection and post shingles. Always unsteady after dialysis. The huge lump on the spinal area after his fall is bothering me. The last time he fell I drove him to the ER coz he had trouble breathing and had a slight fit. Hes been in and out of high care and home for afew days but still weak and cant sleep. He forgets and tries to wake up out of the bed and falls......please tell me if I should worry about the lump on back or hang on till the morning for the doctor to see him. the lump is atleast 15cm long and 8cm wide.

doctor1 MD

Hi,dear thanks or the query. In my opinion this lump is definitely cause for worry and needs to be attended urgtly-STAT.It could be life endagering if you wait till moring.Shift him to nearby hospital. In my opinion could be post-traumatic hematoma.Still in view of the history of Cancer and...

My mom has shingles and was treated seven days ago. Last night she was running a fever that has gotten worse over the night. She s trembling and has double vision . She s also a diabetic, has RA, OA, COPD and polymalgia rheumatica. Her blood sugar was in the 190 s which is lower for her. Hypoglycemia would explain the shaking and double-vision but not the fever... so I m not sure what we should do.

doctor1 MD

Hi,

Thanks for consulting HealthcareMagic!

fever with double vision in an elderly patient with significant medical history of diabetes, COPD should be considered seriously. Blood sugar of 190 is never considered Hypoglycemia in any patient and we cannot attribute shaking and double-vision to it....

Hi, I care for my 90 yr. old mother that has developed shingles. I took her to the dr. and she is on the meds to protect from nerv damage. However the Lyrica he prescribed for pain to be given only at night had a very strange reaction with her. She very soon displayed signs of extreme dementia. I had only given her one dose so stopped. Her regular regiment of hydro codon for her arthritis doesn't seem to be helping her with this additional pain. Is ther something topical I can apply to help? Thank you!

doctor1 MD

Hi there. My name is Vinay. I'm so sorry your having difficulty caring for your Mom. Let me see if I can help give you some options tword her pain relief.

From the sound of it.. you actually have 2 different pain issues that need dealing with..

I have severe post shingles without a rash nerve damage in legs, feet, arms. back. It is burning and shocking all the time I would cut my throat if gabbapentin didn't dull the pain. Is there anything I can do to try to heal the nerves. It has been hurting for almost one year. I do not need an oncologist. My leukemia cannot be treated. I am dying from fibrosis. I need a specialist to help me with my post shingles nerve pain, not an oncologist, there is no treatment for my leukemia. I am dying

I have had loose stools and a low grade fever 98.9 to 100 on and off since yesterday. I'm 61 HIV positive but I saw my ID specialist on Tuesday and my CD4s are 720 and my Viral load is undetectable. I did have the shingles vaccine on Tuesday but did not seem to have any symptoms. I did eat some catfish on Wednesday and I'm wondering if I could have gotten some kind of gastric infection.

doctor1 MD

Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

Since you were seen by your doctor only a few days ago and assessed as well it is less likely to be related to HIV.
It is possible that you have gastroenteritis which is commonly caused by a viral infection though bacteria can sometimes cause these...

am a femal that is 5 ft 2 in and 280 lbs. This morning I woke up to dizzyness. I still have dizzy spells from time to time, but am constantly light-headed and lightly thumping. Last night and today my right arm stays in a constant state inbetween normal and numb. Once and a while I have a pain in it but it is not often. I have been in and out of nausea or heartburn all day long. I was wondering if I should go to the ER for a heart problem?

Hi, for the past week I have been extremely dizzy and had diaorrhoea. Yesterday I had a sudden, Sharp, throbbing pain in the left side of my head which immobilised me and lasted for about 10 minutes. I had a short spell of numbness in my left arm afterwards and my head now feels strange and numb. I also have to pass a bowel motion immediately after eating and although this is now not diaorrhoea it is still quite loose and bright yellow in colour.

Hi, my bf and I had dry humping couple of times yesterday. He had 2 boxers on and shorts and I had my panties. We tried to make sure nothing came on me. The next day evening I started feeling nauseous and tired. After a day, I still felt slight nausea but whenever I ate something, it stopped. I urinate a lot too and feel tired. I belch a lot too. My breasts feel a little tender and nipples hurt(i think they hurt because of bf making out on them too much yesterday). Am I pergnant?
