Hi there! Thanks for coming to HealthCareMagic. My name is Dr. Vinay Bhardwaj and I noticed that your query has been holding out for quite awhile.

I thought I might try and give you some basic information and advice so that you know how to deal with the new medication being added into your current medication regime.

Now, I see that you have Crohns and you have been managing it with cannabis. Ok cool. Now, you mentioned you had a blood clot recently and that you've been started on Xarelto (Rivaroxaban), a prescription blood thinner.

Now, The marijuana actually has different effects based on how you ingest it. if you smoke it or vape it.. the inflammatory effects of the smoke may increase your risk of getting a blood clot.. in spite of the Xarelto. I think the Vaping is definitely better than smoking it.. but they can both irritate the lungs a bit.

On the other hand.. edible cannabis would probably thin your blood ever so slightly more.

All of this translates to a situation where you have to keep track of the clotting factors in your blood closely. There is a simple way to do this.

You have to go to the doctors office every week or so and get a Blood Clotting Profile done. Its a battery of blood tests which include, Platelet count, INR, PTT etc and these tests will give your physician the ability to tweak the dosage of the Xarelto, or stop it if necessary.

So, my advice to you is to call up your doctors office and discuss the need for such a test over the phone. Tell them that since you are using medical marijuana and that you ant to be careful. I'm sure they will do the needful for you. Once you have those results. We can discuss them and see if anything needs doing.

I hope this helps, let me know how I can clear things up further.

Thank you for the reply

Ok so I will speak to my doctor and I will insist on these blood tests each week

What is the risk of the blood being slightly thinner?

And if i can get the blood tests I should go for edibles or gelatin capsules (coconut oil and cannabis oil) rather than the smoke or vale?

Thank you XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Sounds like a plan.

Detailed Answer:
Hey there,
So you probably won't have to get that Blood Profile done every week. Let your Primary decide the frequency.

When it comes to the risks of very thin blood... the risk is bleeding... cutting yourself when you shave.. bleeding heavily from a bruise etc.

It's not a minor issue. So you want to stay on top of this. That having been said, these drugs are pretty good at NOT going too far. So you don't have to worry.

In any case... as far as hoe you use your medical marijuana.. I would guess that edibles are the way to go, especially if you are treating Crohns.

Hope this helps,

Vinay
