What Are The Long Term Effect Of Telma 80 On Kidneys?

default
Posted on Tue, 9 Feb 2016
Question: Hello,
I have been on Telma 80 (Telmisartan) medication for hypertension for about 7 years. I have an electronic BP measurement system at home. My usual measurements vary between 120/80 to 130/80. About 3-4 years back, even with Telma 80, my BP would be around 140/90. After that I improved eating habits (less outside food) and started running/exercising. Since then BP improved significantly.
I understand that the general advice is to continue using medication. I am concerned about long term impact on Kidney and other possible side effects. (My recent preventive health checkups were all normal).
Is it possible that I can gradually cut down on medication (Temla 40 -> 20) along with consistent exercise/running - and eventually do away with medication?

Thanks,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Maintaining appropriate BP is more important.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome To HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney. I understand your concern.
First of all you need to understand that every drug or medicine has it's side effects but we have to compare that the side effects that may appear would trouble you more or the disease for which you are taking the medicine.
I don't know even a single patient who has got his life endangered due to prolonged use of Temisartan under the doctor's guidance. But I know a lot of patients who didn't take appropriate treatment and developed the complications of high BP like kidney failure, Stroke , Heart attacks!!
So my recommendations would be to continue at present with 80 mg of Telmisartan only as your BP is excellent with that. With the course of time with regular exercises, weight reduction, yoga you may give a trial of reducing the medicine to 40 mg. If your BP is well maintained below 140/80 mmHg on 40 mg of dose I don't mind taking that.
I hope it helps you.
If you have any further query, please ask me.
