Question: Hi.

I am on thyroxine and also Elleste Duet.

I don't want to continue with Elleste: I feel nauseated, bloated, depressed, with no libido and I'm experiencing light headedness and palpitations.

Can I simply reduce dosage to very other day, every three days, then stop Elleste?

Brief Answer:
Two ways to stop - you can try tapering if you wish.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
There are two ways in which HRT can be discontinued.
The first one is where you quit cold turkey.
This suits some women .
The other is tapering it off gradually.
Here you take the medication every alternate day for a week, then every third day for a week, then twice a week for a week, and then stop.
Both ways are fine, and it depends on the individual person, as to what suits whom.
You can go for the tapering dose if you wish.
That would be fine.
All the best

Thanks so much for your swift response!

I think I'll taper off my hrt, so will do as you suggest.

Are there other natural products which you would recommend to ease the transition?

I'm concerned primarily about osteoporosis which runs in my family.

Thanks.

Thank you for the appreciation.
A few points which maybe pertinent in your case -
1. You would expect difficulty even while weaning off, as the symptoms might appear to come back with a vengeance. You need to give your body time, and remember that it will take tremendous will power and dedication to come out trumping this.
2. NOTHING can replace diet and exercise. Maintain an ideal diet - fresh, organic, home cooked, nothing processed, less fat intake, less of oil, spice and grease. Fresh green vegetables, fresh ingredients, natural seasonings, limited intake of red meat , maximum intake of fluids, soups, broths, water - will help.
3. Exercise for atleast 30 minutes each day, for atleast 5 days a week.
4. Yoga / meditation / Reiki / relaxation therapy ( music , hobbies, painting ) - can help in easing this transition and maintaining the vitality of your body and mind. All of these are stress busters and you need that.
5. Up your intake of calcium and vitamin D containing foods. Calcium and vitamin D supplements also will help. If osteoporosis runs in your family, and you have symptoms that are ominous, get a Bone Mineral Density Scan done and consider drug therapy targeted for osteoporosis.
Please go through this link, it might help -
http://www.patient.co.uk/health/osteoporosis-leaflet
6. There are natural products such as soy, dong quai, black cohosh, bioidentical hormones etc. None are proven to help beyond a limit, and yet, individual responses to them differ. You may try experimenting with them, and see if something suits your body.
7. A few more links, that you might go through, and which will motivate you to hold yourself together as you wean yourself off the HRT -
http://www.webmd.com/menopause/features/quitting-hormone-replacement-therapy
https://www.womentowomen.com/bioidenticals-and-hrt/what-to-expect-when-you-stop-hrt/
8. As many websites say, at the cost of repetition - menopause is a period when your body changes, and your mind can control that change to a great extent. It is a sort of menarchae ( adolescence ) in reverse, and if you recollect, that too was a time fraught with horrid symptoms, scares, insecurities and adjustments.
You are wiser, older, more beautiful and more in control of it now !
Hope my ( sermon ) helped :)
