Question: I want to consult regarding my father. He is 68 years of age. Have pain due to hernia in abdomen. After consulting with some doctors, they told that since nothing is getting stucked in hernia, there is no need of operation. Also since few days my father is not eating anything, just a soup once a day. He is regular alocholic and tobacco consumer. Due to pain and hunger issues, not drinking since few days. In his blood test, hemoglobin level is low. I am very concerned that he is not eating anything. Please suggest.

Brief Answer:
He should be investigated.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

In hernia, pain will be present when the bowel or omental fat gets stuck in the sac. In most of the cases, bowel goes back into abdomen relieving the pain. In few, the bowel gets stuck and doesn't go inside the abdomen leading to Intestinal obstruction. This is an emergency condition which requires emergency surgery.

Pain will be on and off in hernia which is reducible.

As hernia has no medical management, surgery has to be done.
Please rule out other causes for pain abdomen in your father.

Please consult a General surgeon or a Surgical Gastroenterologist, get examined clinically and get investigated. Contrast enhanced CT scan of the abdomen will give a proper clue.

If hernia is the only problem, do plan for surgery.
Nothing to worry.

Hope I answered your query.
Wish you good health.
Regards
