Question: I have been diagnosed as having suspected inflamatory bowel disease - recently I have been suffering severe bouts of urgency (some resulting in incontinance) - these attacks come out of no-where ....one minute I am feeling perfectly normal and the next second I'm struggling to contain a bowel movement (sometimes unsuccessfully) - the usual process involves uncontrolled loss of urine and whilst trying to stop it I can loose control of the bowel. I take 4 x 1g Pentasa per day - I've introduced 4 x Citrucel capsuals a day to off-set watery motions. The majority of my motions have signs of blood in the pan (or in bowel water) or on the paper - afternooons and nights bring the most frequesncy. My question is what can I do to stop the urgency related loss of bowel control .... its affecting my ability to go out to work.
Brief Answer:
Fecal Incontinence
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Delighted to be able to help.
Fecal Incontinence linked to inflammatory bowel disease is a complex problem.
Due the pathology, occurs hyperstimulation of bowel nerve fibers and the patient feels the need to go to the bathroom urgently.
Exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor and external anal sphincter or Neuromodulator therapy are some of the possible therapies but their effectiveness is limited.
When a person with inflammatory bowel disease suffers a crisis (with diarrhea and urgency in defecation), the best therapy is to start as soon as possible taking a corticosteroid by mouth (Prednisone, for example).

Thank you for your advice.
I have Panafcort 5mg tablets (assume similar to Prednisone). My doctor is away and I can't reach him. What dosage should I commence with? In general how long does it take to bring a UC flare under control?
I look forward to you answer.
Brief Answer:
Prednisolone
