Suggest Treatment For Vaginal Bleeding

Question: Hi, I'm a 59 yr old female with numerous GI issue for which I take numerous meds--IBS/C, post cholecystectomy syndrome, GERD--as well as Hashimoto's. I'm morbidly obese & recently started a diet and have lost 11 lbs (only 140 more to go). I've had 2 C-sections, a radical hysterectomy (left only vagina), had a LapBand placed & then removed when my gallbladder had to be removed. My main problem is this: I thought I had bleeding hemorrhoids from straining, but bright blood appears to be coming from my vaginal area or urethra. Any ideas as to what might be causing the bleeding?

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. The primary issue to distinguish is whether the bleeding is from your vagina or whether it is from your urethra/urine. A simple step would be to wipe the area dry and then pass urine and collect mid stream urine to send it for routine microscopy and culture and sensitivity. The report of routine microscopy would indicate whether blood is present in urine and whether there seems to be an infection associated. If that is the case, treatment with antibiotics should resolve the problem. If that is not the case, the blood must have come from the vagina. That could be due to hormonal deprivation or other causes requiring further evaluation.

I also have severe hemorrhoids (probably fissures), and was wondering if that might be the main problem? Blood doesn't SEEM to be coming from anus, rather from the vagina or urine. But since I can't really see the area myself, it's difficult to tell. So hormonal deprivation could still possibly cause issues, even though I had a hysterectomy?
Thank you for your advice and explanation/information. I will try to see my PCP next week, if this continues.

Thanks for writing back. Sorry for not being able to respond faster.

You need to take a fiber rich diet on regular basis and back it up with fiber supplements like psyllium husk or senna in order to control your constipation. It is very important. If the blood seems to be coming along with your urine, a routine microscopy will confirm and I would insist you to get it done. In case it is coming from the vagina, further evaluation would be required. See if you can see your PCP earlier.
