Question: My sister, age 50, has two grown up children ---is suufering from uterus-fibroid related bleeding. A few days back she had an episode of severe stomach pain and was admitted to Hospital. Her Haemoglobin level was found to be 4 and after blood infusion it stands at 9 level. What could have triggered such severe pain and low Haemoglobin. A week earlier she appeared to be normal. Please suggest safe future course of treatment?

Brief Answer:
Fibroid is causing low hemoglobin

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I have gone through your query and I understand your concerns anemia ( Low hemoglobin) related to fibroid..

Following is my reply:

1. I could see a large fibroid in attached ultrasound scan report.

2. This fibroid has led to bleeding over a long term and has led to such a low hemoglobin due to blood loss.

3. First thing is to stabilize her hemoglobin levels as it is being done now.

4. Check hemoglobin levels after one week.

5. If hemoglobin level is normal, go for hysterectomy (removal of uterus) surgery as she has completed family and does not need uterus with fibroid any longer.

6. Hysterectomy will give a permanent cure from future episodes of such bleeding and anaemia.

I hope your doubt is clarified. Let me know if you wish any other information.

Regards,
Dr. Soumya

Thanks Doctor. I just want to know that can we wait for 7-15 days? Hope this does not involve any risk? What was the cause of stomach pain? Does Haemoglobin goes down to such level in fibroid related case? We want operation after a week but fear that the episode does not repeat?

Brief Answer:
Fibroid is cause of stomach pain

Detailed Answer:
Hi

You can definitely wait for 7 to 15 days or even a month. There is no hurry.

This does not involve any risk.

Fibroid is the cause for stomach pain.

Hemoglobin level goes down in fibroid case due to bleeding.

The episode does not repeat if she is on medicines.
