Suggest Treatment For Tight Esophagus And Abdominal Pain After Eating Noodles

Posted on Mon, 5 May 2014
Question: Hello. I ate tomato soup with thin noodles, and took a big piece, was so hungry I forgot to chew it and swallowed it whole. My esophagus felt tight, I felt in pain and my check stated to feel like I was having a heart attack. I felt as if the tiny noodles were still partially in my throat and partially I could feel it going down into my intestines also causing a right side pain and back pain. I took a tablet of buscopan forte and it helped. This was four hours ago, just now after having a small snack of cottage cheese and date sauce I started to feel pain again but nothing sever like before. I was wondering if I have caused myself any damage and what should I do? Should I take in only liquids for the next day or two? What type of foods can I eat and tomorrow I am participating in jogging (2 hour jog I do) and following day in archery. Can I do these physical activities? Please give me advice. Thank you very much for you time, I appreciate it.

Brief Answer: If all is well, you can go for all activities. Detailed Answer: Hi XXXXX ! Good evening. I am Dr Shareef answering your query. From your history, you do not seem to have caused any major injury to your esophagus. If I were your doctor, I would advise you for a proton pump inhibitor, and a liquid antacid with a local anaesthetic combination, which would relieve you of your symptoms. However, you might have to continue these medications at least for six weeks to help any minor injury caused to the esophagus heal soon. In the mean while, you might have to change your dietary habits towards more of bland diet without any oil, chilli or fried fast food and take enough of liquids till your symptoms are completely relieved.Avoid hot tea, alcoholic beverages and smoking if you do. All these might aggravate your symptoms and do more harm. If you feel healthy, you can participate in any kind of activities. However, a clinical examination by your family physician would be a pre-requisite before you go for such activities. I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts. Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. Wishing you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.

Hi Dr Shareef, Thank you for your answer. I don't drink alcohol, smoke or take any medications. I do like to drink tea, and coffee and juices. That's about it. My foods are organic pescetarian diet with herbs and spices but minimal oils and never fried foods. I haven't see any physician since last year and I don't have a family doctor as such why I found this online health care site. Thank you again for your answer, I will be lighter on my diet for this next few days and take in more liquids. Hopefully will feel well to continue my physical sporting activities. Best wishes, XXXXX
