Suggest Treatment For Swollen Lymph Nodes In The Groin Area

default
Posted on Wed, 28 Sep 2016
Question: Hello, I found a hardened vessel-like structure in my groin area. I do not believe it is a hardened vein and neither does my gp. It is very hard, maybe an inch long, and kind of bends in the middle forming a V. Any clue as to what this could be?
I wanted to add that a CBC was done and my MCH and MCHC are higher than normal, but barely. MCH is 31.7 (normal range is 27-31.2) and MCHC is 35.6 (normal 31.8-35.4). The nurse who discussed these results said this could have been an error in the lab.

Brief Answer:
It can be a group of lymph nodes

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

A hardened structure which is an inch long and in the groin region might be an enlarged group of lymph nodes. The V bend which you mention can be an area where the lymph node groups meet. There are occasions when lymph nodes can enlarge in the groin without any symptoms like pain and with normal blood reports.

Another rare possibility can be a small hernia but at your age such a condition is rare.

An ultrasound scan is required to confirm the area and your GP is rightly recommending it for you.

Hope your query is answered.

Thank you, you were spot on. They are in fact lymph nodes.

I did some searching and found that the term for this is called "matted lymph nodes," and this happens frequently from infections or malignancy. A few days ago I noticed that another lymph node became enlarged on the opposite side. I have no scrapes, cuts, or injuries, should I be worried about some form of lymphomas?

This may be totally unrelated, but yesterday I started my menstrual cycle two weeks early. This is totally abnormal for me. I have also lost a few pounds (3.5 to be exact) in the last few weeks, and usually with strict dieting and exercise I struggle losing weight.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Brief Answer:
Lymphoma is a rare possibility and patients have fever and weightloss

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

Matted lymph nodes are particular pattern of lymph nodes based on how they enlarge. In matted type the lymph nodes are sort of connected to each other and can be seen in tuberculosis, sarcoidosis or rarely malignancy.

If you are worried about lymphoma then it is a rare condition and the patient has symptoms like fever and weight loss for 2 months.

However I recommend a FNAC or biopsy test to confirm your condition if there are significantly enlarge lymph nodes in your groin and it is good to get both sides examined and ultrasound scan done.

Regarding your early periods, I guess it is due to the stress and anxiety you are having. Please relax and proceed with your ultrasound scan. However if your periods are longer than usual and if they get early next time too then it will be good to talk to your gynecologist.

Hope your query is answered.
