Suggest Treatment For Swelling In Foot, Fatigue And Abdominal Hernia In An Elderly Person

Posted on Thu, 11 Feb 2016
Question: I am a 71 year old female, no matter what my weight was, I have never had swollen feet and ankles unless I had an infection, 1 severe, 1 pneumonia, 1 UTI. I have very red swollen feet, and on bottom, and ankles just white swollen, top of foot, up shin bones and other areas not as bad. Gained 10 lbs in 2 weeks, which was in hosp. 3days in middle of November, but in last 2weeks, I have been having 4-5 bowel movements a day. I have fatigue. Hurts when I walk, have laid down many days and elevated feet, did not make a difference. Any suggestions, I have also been wheezing sometimes, which may be from my stomach hernia, that gives me acid symptoms. I have to have a yearly endoscopy because of this and take medications for this, thank you

Brief Answer:
Possible heart failure

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I am Dr Mittal. I have read your message. I think I can help you.
The symptoms of the query are quite suggestive of a possible heart failure.
In this condition, the pumping of the heart is affected.
So the water accumulates in the body.
It could be due to the heart problem or even during infections.
I will suggest that you test with a echocardiography.
if you have a heart failure swelling would be easily reversible with diuretics.
I have tried to make it as simple as possible. I hope that the information contained in this message will be able to help you find the best solution for your problem. Best of luck. Dr Mittal

Thank you so much. I did forget to mention that I have small red rashes on feet and limbs and smaller over other parts. The feet are red on top and bottom, and red on both palms, feet are hot, but hurtful to touch. About 2 months ago had a full cardiology work up. Does cardio gram mean an echocardiogram. Thanks for to your patience

Brief Answer:
Specific information

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
The redness may be associated with the swelling, I am assuming the swollen areas are warmER than the rest of the body.
Yes , I was indeed suggesting echocardiography.
As I said before, the infection can cause deterioration of the heart functions. So a repeat test may help.
Also test a renal function test as well on view of the history of infection.
Best of luck. Dr Mittal.
