Question: Hi ,I'm a 60 year old woman that recently got a job in a small company sewing .The building is about 3000 square feet and totally enclosed with no ventilation . They also use a hot cutting machine for rubber elastic and various rope in the room . The odor and fumes are tough to tolerate. Outside of a sore throat what health issues could I be facing.

Brief Answer:
Cancer risk if for sure you are exposed to rubber products!

Detailed Answer:
HI and thanks so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this scenario that you have raised. This clearly constitutes an occupational exposure and needs to be addressed. It could be interesting to discuss this with the management and suggest that improved ventilation should be considered.

Risk of longterm exposure to products contained in rubber include leukemia, lymphoma, and cancers of the urinary bladder, lung, and stomach. Other concerns include cancer of the prostate, larynx and oesophagus.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to follow up with me if need be. Keep me updated on how the management entertains and addresses this worry.
