Suggest Treatment For Sore Throat And Fever With Body Aches

default
Posted on Wed, 30 Sep 2015
Question: Hi dr,

Two days ago I got a sore throat. The following morning I woke up shaking with a fever and body aches still with the sore throat. Today I got a runny nose which is clear mucus and I got a cough and it isn't frequent but when I do cough my chest hurts a lot similar to the sore throat but it isn't a heavy type of cough. So my question is with the symptoms described will it heal on its own with rest and what could I possibly have and after how long should I go see the doctor? Also Pandol seems to midly help.

Regards,

Brief Answer:
Viral respiratory infection can last 5 to 7 days.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking HCM.

I have gone through your query. Your problem is most likely viral respiratory infection. It can last 5 to 7 days. The severity will decrease after 2 to 3 days.

Taking adequate rest , taking warm fluids like tea with lemon , warm chicken soup and chewable vitamin C will be helpful. Over the counter nasal decongestants , antihistamines like benadryl and paracetamol can be taken.

If there is increase in fever or body pain or chest discomfort or yellowish phlegm then approach your GP as it can be sign of secondary bacterial infection and in such case antibiotics will be required.

As you get hurting chest better to approach your GP to check your chest for congestion. Blood routine should be done as you had fever for 2 days already. If there is signs of bacterial infection in blood routine also antibiotic is prescribed.

Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.

Thanks for that but you don't think it could be a flu? Especially with the shaking and body aches at night plus fatigue? Do you think I should go to the doctors if after 3 days the symptoms don't decrease?

Explained below.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome again.

Thank you for your follow up.

Yes, it can be flu (viral respiratory infection). But secondary bacterial infection is possible after getting flu. Fatigue and body aches are usual for flu also. For flu rest and symptomatic treatment is only needed. But if there is signs of bacterial infection like increase in fever ,body ache or yellowish phlegm or increase in chest congestion antibiotics will be needed.

If after 3 days there is no decrease in symptoms better to approach your GP.

Let me know if anything not clear. I am happy to help you.
Thanks.
