Brief Answer:
Infection or allergy

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

The reason most commonly would be infection with organism or an allergic reaction to an allergen. Do you smoke? Do you have any other medical problems? It started with nose, oral cavity and throat now it is progresssing down to the upper airways.

You can try over the counter benadryl for three doses a day or two as they do not make any difference changing the course of the illness. If it does not help you need a prescription of antibiotics by your local doctor. Till then warm water with salt gargles, over the counter cough syrup like Benadryl and good amount of water to stay hydrated. If you have a humidifier it would be good to keep it in the room to ease the secretions in the airways.

Hope this helps.

My throat feels swollen and at times hard to swallow and my voice gets scratchy as well. I don't smoke and my allergies are usually in the spring as tree and plants bloom.

Brief Answer:
dispersible aspirin gargles helps

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

The swelling of the throat is due to mucus and edema. Salt water gargles along with dispersible aspirin gargles (if not allergic to) will help a lot. Suck on popsicles which can reduce the edema further. The screachy voice is because of the same at the vocal cords.
