Question: Do not know where to start. I used to be big into bodybuilding and working out. Last XXXXXXX I completed a high repetition workout one in which I completed a few times before. It was basically 120 reps. I completed it before with no problems. During the workout, everything went great no problems. When I got into bed that night I noticed a faint feeling of swelling in one of my knees. The next night I had to go to the ER because my knee swelled up like a grapefruit. The ER doc said it was DOMS and it rest at least a week. I followed doc's orders. Well, swelling went down however whenever I would exercise my knee would swell. I went to physical therapy and that did not do much. Throughout the summer last year I started noticing that my legs were getting swollen. Whenever I would work out my legs felt heavy and swollen and not the kind of swollen that feels good; it was the one that was concerning. I could not even feel my muscles working at all when I would complete exercises. This progressively started getting worse where I could simply wake up and feel swollen. I went on what is called the Wahl's protocol which is heavily veggie based, gluten and dairy free and I actually gained weight from which I could only attribute to fluid. I cannot even walk a half of a mile without my legs full legs getting swollen. My socks and shoes leave indentations and these shoes were so loose when I bought them so much so I was upset I bought them. Now they are so tight. I gave up weightlifting and exercise because it became so distressing that I could not do what I love without swelling up and my legs are so uncomfortable. Since decreasing my activity to basically nothing my legs still swell. I feel that something in my legs are compressing on something because when I sit down my thighs feel swollen.

Doctors have no idea. I have had EKG, ultrasound of heart, ultrasound of legs, various labs, compression stocking custom tailored to me were unsuccessful, medication has been unsuccessful, MRI of pelvis and abdomen apparently showed nothing. I am at my wit's end. I have never had this problem before. I have now gained a considerable amount of weight because I cannot exercise everything I do produces swelling. BTW there is virtually no pain through this. When I am driving my calf muscles feel tight and swollen. I could sit down for five minutes and get up and feel swollen. I can be sitting down and feel my thighs are swollen. Day or night no matter...does not get any better or worse......

My doctors keep putting me off. I went off birth control and that showed no change other than bring severe PCOS symptoms back.

Not sure whether you should know that I was rear ended twice in the span of six months and now have chronic upper back and neck pain that nothing works for either.

What is described above is not even all of my medical problems. I am desperate for answers. All I get from doctors is that deal with it and have a nice day. I thought maybe consulting a neurologist would provide another sort of idea. If you have any ideas, please I am desperate. All these medical problems have taken any quality of life I have out of it. Thank you for listening.

Brief Answer:
Metabolic causes and neuropathy should be considered.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

If this conversation could help you in some way, I recommend you some other tests that can help understand better your condition.

It is necessary to evaluate kidneys and thyroid gland functions with blood tests.

It is also necessary to measure the blood proteins levels.

Besides metabolic causes of legs swelling related to kidneys, thyroid gland dysfunction, peripheral neuropathy, and/or autonomic neuropathy should be considered as possibilities as well.

Autonomic neuropathy may explain other symptoms besides swelling too.

Autonomic neuropathy is a possible complication of a number of other diseases.

It is necessary to discuss with your Doctor about getting tested further with tests such nerves conduction study and EMG,

Tests to evaluate autonomic nervous system function are needed too (thermoregulatory sweat test, tilt table test,
gastrointestinal tests).

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Greetings.
