when a common cold subsides, sometimes the mucus is very sticky and difficult to drain. Sticky mucus may cause persistent cough and when you're lying down the mucus follows the law of gravity and obstructs your airways.
You can try irrigating your nasal passages regularly during the day and before lying down with normal saline. If this is not enough then an antihistamine may 'dry' your nose but this is not usually recommended.
If you've got fever or severe headache you should be examined by a doctor because antibiotics might be required.
