Nasal irrigation

What is Nasal irrigation?

Nasal irrigation is the practice of flushing the nose and the sinus spaces around it with warm saline solution. This is done to clear out mucus, moisturize the nose, and improve nasal hygiene. It is also used to treat sinus infections, allergies, the common cold, post-nasal drip, and others conditions affecting the nose.

Brief Answer:
You can use a Netipot or a saline nasal irrigation kit

A Netipot or a saline nasal irrigation system can help with this but unless the ear pain resolves within three days you need to have a doctor take a look since you might need a course of oral antibiotics...

In January had sinus surgery, since then have had a sinus infection every month. In July got sinus infection that wont respond to antibotics. My symptons include swollen glands, extreme fatigue, facial pain, clogged ears, burry vision. Finally got a ct scan which showed a pockect of infection that was missed. I had surgery two weeks ago and I still have swollen glands, extreme fatigue, and facial pain. What could possibly still be wrong? I think I should request an MRI?

doctor1 MD

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. If you can share your CT Scan images, it will be possible for me to comment exactly on the sequence of events. An MRI probably has an advantage of detecting fungal infection and having less radiation. Otherwise a CT Scan is the gold standard imaging because MRI...

Hi Doctor starting three months ago exactly I got sick like I never did before with just huge gobs of clear mucus choking me and I couldn't sleep for nearly 4 days. After that I had a cough for nearly 2.5 months which just went away about a week ago. I've seen an ENT who did a full nasal endoscopy, sinus ct scan (normal), transnasal endoscopy (normal), double ph probe (normal), chest xray (normal), pulmonary function (normal), allergy test positive (very high) for dust mites.

Medications I'm on - Flovent 250 for asthma.

I still feel mucus in my throat some days and some post nasal drainage and pressure in my cheeks and face when bending over. However they tell me that I don't have a sinus infection because of the negative CT scan. I really believe I have/had a sinus infection. Can you please advise any other tests to get, can I still have a sinus infection despite the ct scan? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

doctor1 MD

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. If all the above investigations are normal, then only medication should heal your sinuses. There is minimal role for surgery in such cases.

2. An MRI may pick up a Allergic Fungal Rhinosinusitis (AFRS) while a CT Scan may not easily detect it.

3. You have already...

thank you

doctor1 MD

Hello,

Thanks for posting your query.

It is normal to find congestion of the nose after 1 week or 10 days of surgery but since he had prior sinus problems as well, so it is more likely that the cough and mucus and nasal congestion is due to the sinus infection and not the adenoidectomy.

In a...

I had a cold/sore throat for a few days, which involved much nasal blockage. I mainly used saline/neti pot washing to clear this. The initial symptoms subsided after about 5 days but now I have a foul
odor in my head when I breathe through my nose; plus I have
almost no sense of smell other than the internal odor.

This has happened a number of times over the years but I would not consider it to be a chronic condition. Still it is very bothersome and I don't know what to do about it other than wait for it to go away and hope. Any thoughts?
I'm 59, 5' 8" and in generally good health.

Hi,

You are having allergic rhinosinusitis. Please undergo a nasal endoscopy and X-ray pns to see whether you have any polyps or not. Start taking fluticasone nasal spray, antiallergic tablet, steam inhalation, betadine gargle.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you...

I've been feeling not well lately. Digestion problems, morning nausea and retching, diarrhea, lots of mucus from the throat and nose, and stiffness. A CT Scan revealed mainly arthritis in lower back and hips. Nothing of note in abdomenal area other than some diverticulosis. i can feel the stiffness in my body as well as in my fingers and heel. But can arthritis make me feel sick generally? to the point of weakness, nausea, copious mucus? One odd symptom -- tenderness in my mid-back that is sore to the touch, and seems to be the source of the nausea ... is that arthritis?

doctor1 MD

Hello
Thanks for writing to us.
Arthritis is commonly seen due to the age related degenerative changes in the joints. Arthritis usually presents with joint pain, stiffness and sometimes tenderness.
The disease as such does not cause general problems like weakness, nausea, copious mucus, etc....

Hello Dr. Bhatti,
I am medical doctor myself but I have a very hard problem with my 18 year old son. He had to be operated 8 times because of nasal polyposis, mucoceles with destructions of the os frontale and orbita and he got a lot of complications. He is ass-intolerant and histamin-intolerant and has a lot of allergies, especially against candida and other fungus.
Asthma bronchiale is leaving since he knows the histamin-intolerance and is living with his diet.
He is suffering of very bad mucosa-swelling of his nose and of his left eye-lid every two weeks, we still don`t know the reason, and only 150 mg of prednisolone for 2 days can help him. Do you have any idea where to look for any reason or how to help him?
Do you know anything about hpv infection and nasal polyposis?
Who could be a specialist for this problem? Until now nobody could really help him to prevent the next polyposis and mucosa swelling.
Since one year he is not able to visit school.
I would be glad if you should have any ideas what to do now.
Thank you very much
Dr. Heike Goede

Hello, I am a 25 yr old female. I am about 5'8 & weight about 135lbs. I frequently have sinus infections & my season allergies are terrible all year round. I had a really bad sinus infection about 1 month ago that turned into a respirtory infection.. I was given amoxicillan & felt great after the antibiotic was done. The past 2 days I've had a really bad headache in my forehead & temples & my ears have felt full & have ad alot of pressure. I am also a hypocondriac & take full advantage of my mom being an LPN. When I brought this to her attention last night she said it was probobaly allergies but when I said I dont have any coughing or a stuffy nose she said its still most likely allergies. I had her take my blood pressure (because I'm a hypocondriac) and it was 152/92. Which isnt normal for me. So my question is do I have a sinus infection & is that what caused my blood pressure to be elevated or is my blood pressure high & thats whats causing my headache & ear pain?

doctor1 MD

Hi,

Thanks for the query

The history furnished by you goes in the favor of Allergic Rhinosinusitis and the symptoms what you have developed now could be because of the same condition.

To explain you in brief:
> Nasal allergy leads to nasal congestion causing stuffy nose and difficulty in...

I recently had one side of my nose cauterized. My doctor prescribed me aquaphor(petrolatum) ointment and neilmed sinus rinse. the second night after the cauterization, I rinsed my nose with the saline solution. it didn t work too well. i felt like a sponge absorving some of the saline solution although most of the solution did come out from the other nostril. But I spent the next three hours waking up because of a runny nose. but this mucus and blood secretion was very acidic or corrosive. almost like as if i had inhaled cayene powder. that same night i developed a flu like symptoms, with fever, headache, nasal congestion, sore throath, burned lips and tongue. then most of the syntoms vanished one day later except for the nasal congestion. i read somewhere else that i may have had a mucal purulent discharge from the mucus trapped since long time ago. yesterday i tried to do another sinus rinse but am afraid of getting the flu again. what should i do?
