Suggest Treatment For Severe Scalp Folliculitis While On Isotretinoin

default
Posted on Tue, 21 Jun 2016
Question: For scalp folliculitis, I have been undergoing treatment for five years now. Tried every medicine available. Right now for a flare up I have been given Isotretinoin 10mg for 10 days. I have taken 6 month courses of this drug 3 years ago. Is such a short term dose for 10 days advisable? Is isotretinoin an antibiotic?

Brief Answer:
10 days is too short course, isotretinoin is not an antibiotic

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for being at healthcaremagic
I can understand your concern but a 10 day course is too short to be effective in case of scalp folliculitis.
It needs to be taken for a long duration but under the supervision of the doctor.
Isotretinoin is not an antibiotic.

Thank You. I feel like taking anti biotics everytime I get a flare up all over but I know that's not a permanent cure. But I don't see any other alternative. Should I just take anti biotics again?

Brief Answer:
Start with antibiotics

Detailed Answer:
Yes you need to take antibiotics again.
It has been seen that tablet rifampicin 600 mg daily in combination with capsule doxycycline 100 mg once daily or clindamycin 300 mg twice daily are shown to induce prolonged remission in cases of recurrent persistent folliculitis.
These are prescription drugs and you need to see the doctor in person to get them.

One final question doc - I plan to take Augmentin 625(amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium) twice a day. Should I take Doxy 100 along with it? Is it recommended. I understand these are prescription meds but wanted your opinion. Thanks.
