Question: What can cause hair thinning, breaking?? Not growing or follicles to quit growing and also cause lines, ridges and split fingernails if your thyroid tests come back normal ? ANA test wasn't negative but my Dr said it wasn't bad.

I have noticed hair thinning or changing for past 2 years. It has become very dry and is breaking off or ? Not growing. The nails have changed in past year. Hair thinning was originally on top front but is now more noticeable to me on the sides when I fix my hair. My Dad thinned some on the top as he got into his 70's but no family history among any family member. I am not on medications but am now taking Vitamin D, Biotin and Citracal. No one has hypertension, diabetes or depression in family though brother has pre diabetes. I have remained at the same weight for quite a while and I am not going to the gymn or lifting heavy weights. I noticed the hair loss first on the top front of my head as my long to the side bang has become shorter and shorter. Sides are noticeably thinner to me because of less hair in my curlers, less time to dry and how my hair lays.

Hello

Thank you for getting back with the answers. I have gone through them. Most common causes or hair loss are vitamin deficiency & endocrinological pathologies. Hair growth is a slow process & usually takes some time to show improvement. If i were your treating doctor then i would have advised following things:

- take zinc supplement once a day for 1 month
- multivitamin supplement (like vit b complex) once a day for 3-4 weeks.
- Take a balanced & nutritious diet rich in protein, iron and vitamin A. Good sources include legume, lentils, paneer, green leafy vegetables, fruits and milk.
- Use a mild shampoo
- Stay away from chemical treatments
- Do not tie your hair very tight.
- Massage warm coconut oil into your scalp at least 2-3 times a week. Cover your hair with a warm towel after that for 10-15 minutes.

Hopefully you will see improvement in few weeks BUT if condition remains same or aggravates then you need to visit hospital & get an appointment for a "Consultant Dermatologist" for examination of hairs and further management that would include different options including laser treatment & prescription meds.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help if not then don't forget to close the discussion and rate it.
Wishing you good health !!
