Suggest Treatment For Severe Hair Loss When Diagnosed With GERD

default
Posted on Thu, 14 Jul 2016
Question: Hello Doc,
My name is Nxxxx and I am 25 years old. Since the past couple of months I have been experiencing an increase in hair fall mostly at the crown on my head. I fear that I may be suffering from Male pattern baldness.
I have a history of GERD and hence had to take Pan 20 and sometimes pan 40 tablets. Is pan responsible for the hair loss?
I also suffer from gynecomastia . Is gynecomastia and hair fall some how related to hormonal imbalance?
Please suggest me what diagnostics are required to reach the root cause of the hair fall problem?
Please also suggest any medications and therapies .

Thanks and regards,
xxxxx

Brief Answer:
Seems to be male pattern baldness, rule out causes of gynaecomastia

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for being at healthcaremagic
According to your complaints it seems you have started with male pattern baldness. Are you experiencing recession of your front hair line?
Pantaprazole or pan tablet doesn't cause hair loss.
Gynaecomastia and hair loss can be related as both are related to hormonal disturbances.
The common cause of Gynaecomastia are drugs, hyperthyroidism, testicular tumours, liver and kidney diseases, starvation, physiological causes and somethings it occurs without any cause as well.
I would recommend you to undergo certain tests like serum prolactin levels, thyroid function tests, liver and kidney function tests, free testosterone levels, HIV test.
Also are you having Gynaecomastia in one or both the breasts?
For male pattern baldness, I usually recommend my patients to apply minoxidil 5 percent lotion on the affected areas of the scalp twice daily.
The dose is 1 ml twice daily.
It has to be continued for atleast 4-5 months to see significant response and for atleast 1 year to show maximum benefit.
It is a prescription drug and you need to see a doctor to get it.
For gynaecomastia we first need to find the cause and treatment will depend on it.

Dr Asmeet
