default
Posted on Mon, 16 Jan 2017
Question: I started having diarrhea after taking Amoxicillin and after I stopped taking it the diarrhea did not go away. so I started taking a colon probiotic 4 days ago and started taking Pepto Bismol on Thursday will a full dose 30ml, and 15ml on Friday am. I had no BM on Friday and a formed stool this morning. Later this morning and this afternoon I have a more diarrhea so have taked 2 more 15 ml of Pepto. I am drinking vitamin water and since I am hungry I have been eating small meals, but nothing spicy or fried. What else should I be doing?

Brief Answer:
Antibiotic-associated diarrhoea requires a certain course of action

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. In majority of cases, antibiotic-associated diarrhoea subsides and discontinues once the antibiotic is discontinued. But in a few cases, when it does not your doctor should do the following:

1. Initiate metronidazole antibiotic which takes care of the bacteria that can continue to cause the diarrhoea even after the initial antibiotic (that was causing the diarrhoea) is discontinued

2. Continue the use of probiotics for at least 3-5 days

3. Initiate a daily ORS solution

4. Only if the metronidazole does not work (very rare) another antimicrobial called vancomycin should be initiated

5. Drink plenty of fluids and stay well hydrated

I hope you find my response both helpful and informative. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
