Suggest Treatment For Severe Cough And Asthma While On Gabapentin

default
Posted on Tue, 12 Jul 2016
Question: I have had allergies and asthma but until this spring seemed to have them under control but this spring I can't seem to keep everything in check. My medication list is: symbology, singular, clonazepam and adavil as needed. ILast week the doctor added steroids but don't seem to working. I question it is my asthma flaring up as my cough is dry to semi productive. I have headaches all the time and I ITCH! I take gabapentin for the ITCH. I am wondering if this is more allergies in lieu of asthma. What can I do?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome and thanks for your query.
Asthma requires two kinds of medicines, one is a preventer like Singulair and Symbicort which decrease the severity of the attacks. The other is the reliever like Ventorlin which are short acting bronchodilator ( dilates the air passages so that you can breath easier). Since it is worse in the spring you may have allergy to pollen which is one of the triggers of asthma attack.
Itching and urticarial rash are symptoms of allergy and you could take an antihistamine like Telfast for it. Gabapentin is more helpful in reducing the sensation and not a treatment for allergy.
Advil ( ibuprofen) can worsen asthma in some people and you could also try withholding the same.
Do get back to me if you have more queries.
