Posted on Mon, 22 Dec 2014
Question: I'm having severe anxiety disorder and I don't know why. I also have insomnia. I'm taking 50 MG dhea and bio hormones. I am also on buspar. I was calm before dhea but now I'm restless and anxious with lots of irritability. I'm 57 years old and only weigh 105 pds due to weight loss from c-dif infection from antibiotics in 2010. This anxiety just started and I'm also having fatigue muscle pain and weakness plus lethargy.

Brief Answer:
Anxiety must have increased

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for your query. Welcome to HCM.

First of all few questions:
How long have you been suffering from anxiety? since 2010?
For How long have you been on buspar and which dose?

Muscle fatigue, lethargy, sleep disturbance etc. are common in anxiety disorder. I here feel that buspar will no longer help you. This is the time for changing the drug. There are drugs available which are more effective then buspar like SSRI antidepressants which are approved for all type of anxiety disorders.

In my patient I would have given paroxetine because of it's sedating property.
If anxiety is very severe then initially anxiolytics can be taken, most commonly low dose benzodiazepines like klonopin.

Was the onset of anxiety related to starting DHEA and any other drugs?

You can discuss about this with your treating doctor and get proper treatment. Your anxiety will be easily controlled with the drugs mentioned above. It will take 15 to 20 days to find adequate relief.

Brief Answer:
Anxiety is sometimes difficult to control

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for writing again.

Anxiety is not simple to control, particularly when it is very severe.
If the DHEA is a culprit then talk about it with your doctor who has prescribed it and ask for some other alternatives.

I have said previously that you need to take drugs which are approved for controlling anxiety like SSRI antidepressant drugs. These drugs will benefit you at neurochemical level in brain and completely resolve your anxiety within 2 to 3 months. After starting the drugs you need to continue it for at least 1 year or more depending upon the response.

Apart from this, you can try yoga, meditation and other relaxation exercises, breathing exercises, physical exercise at least 20 minutes a day for 5 days in a week. You can also take help from a counselor for your anxiety issues. Psychiatric illness does not develop because of the weakness. Anyone can develop it; important thing is how you tackle it. You should go for proper treatment under observation of psychiatrist with drugs that can not harm you because of your physical limitations.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have further query then feel free to ask otherwise close the discussion and rate the answer.

Wish you good health.
