Suggest Treatment For Recurring Carcinoid Tumor On Liver

default
Posted on Fri, 23 May 2014
Question: I had carcinoid tumor on my appendix and my ovaries 9 years ago. It has come back and looks like it is on my liver. The doctor said they have to do a liver biopsy because the tumor is showering a spray across the liver not just the tumor. How would you treat this? My doctor said there is a treatment that treats the symptoms or chemo what is your opinion?

Brief Answer:
Hi and welcome to HCM

Detailed Answer:
It depends on size and localization of tumor. You need to do octreotid scan first and see progression of tumor. If this is located only in liver and it is resectable you definitely need surgery: liver resection. If it is spread in liver then you need chemotherapy first and when tumor "shrinks" then liver resection can be done.
Before all this, biopsy should confirm the ecxact diagnosis. Treatment for symptoms is so called palliative and it cant cure you ,it will just relieve symptoms. Wish you good health. Feel free to ask. Regards

Brief Answer:
hi

Detailed Answer:
how do you know that it is in liver if there wasnt activity on octreotide scan?
In every case, biopsy of liver lesions must be perfoemd since it could be some other tumor, nit just carcinoid. My opinion is that you need to have surgery and biopsy cane done intraoperatively and then surgeon can decide about the extension of surgical procedure. If this is inoperable then there are some less efficeint methods such as radiolabeled octreotide and the radiopharmaceutical 131I-mIBG and it should be started as soon as possible. cehmotherapy has bad results for this type of tumor unfortunately. Wish you good health. Regards
