Suggest Treatment For Recurring UTI

default
Posted on Mon, 10 Nov 2014
Question: I was diagnosed with uti about 3 weeks ago. They gave me bactrim and I couldnt take it. Went back in and they said my urine didnt look bad at all then and gave me macrobid in case I needed it. I thought it was going away. Now, a few weeks later I dont think it is gone and I am having a little left side or more to the back pain. Could it be kidney infection now and if so will the macrobid take care of it? I am
going to start taking it.

Brief Answer:
Since this is recurrence it should be investigated

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Since this is recurrence it should be investigated first.

To rule out kidney infection get ultrasound and urine routine done.

To see what organism is causing this, get urine culture done.Hold antibiotics till you give urine for testing and culture.

There are many organisms which can cause UTI.Generally broad spectrum antibiotics are given without testing. In most individuals the infections gets cleared by this drugs.

But if infection persists or recurs, one has to get tested to know type of organism. The culture tests also predict which antibiotic will prove helpful.

So get investigated and then only start antibiotics.

Please ask if there are doubts.Regards.

I am in TN in the mountains until sunday. will it be ok to wait until sun or mon? I have not taken any meds so far except one bactrim and couldnt take that antbiotic. that has been almost 3 weeks ago. I just thought I should take the macrobid and hope that works so I dont get worse by sun. im just having a little back discomfort. I also think I have had a little blood in urine but not sure and have now started my monthly cycle.

Brief Answer:
If you drink lots of water, you can wait.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

If you drink lots of water ,eat berries and drink juices, you can wait till sunday without medications.Increased urine output can flush off infection and help you wait till sunday.

Only if you get fever , you will have to start antibiotics immediately.
