Thank you so much Dr. XXXXXXX ..Not much sputum, light or clear; he usually just spits if he as any. No breathlessness, but he sounds very "croaky"; no history of allergy, no fever, it did not start with a cold, no stuffy nose

Brief Answer:
It can be related to laryngopharyngeal reflux.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome again.

Thank you for your follow up query.

In that case it can be related to laryngopharyngeal reflux. Acid reflux can cause throat and upper respiratory irritation cough and mucus production. Taking proton pump inhibitors like esomeprazole ( Nexium ) for 1 to 2 weeks will be helpful for this. Avoid excess spicy, excess fatty and junk food. Carbonated drinks and coffee should be avoided also.Have dinner at least 2 hours before bed time. Raise the head end more with extra pillows while sleeping.

Even after following above measures still he is having cough then consult your physician for proper physical examination and auscultation of lungs.

Let me know if anything not clear.
I am happy to help you.
Thanks.
