Posted on Tue, 12 Apr 2016
Question: I have been experiencing discomfort and have been taking an anti acid over the counter pill, Ranitidine (I ran out and started using Equate otc) for about 7 months. Usually I need one or two a day. This does not seem to be getting better or getting worse. I am not sure what is causing this. It is worrisome..

Brief Answer:
Omeprazole

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Previously you got relief with Ranitidine.
Since you dont get relief with it anymore you can switch to Proton pump inhibitors like Cap.Omeprazole 40mg Twice daily before food for first 5 days then reduce it to Once daily before breakfast for the next 15days .

If there is loss of appetite, loss of weight, low hemoglobin, discuss with your doctor about getting an Upper GI Endoscopy done.

Feel free to ask any further queries.

Regards,
Dr.R.K.

Brief Answer:
Endoscopy and tests for H.pylori

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Since the symptoms return if you stop medications, I advise you to undergo an upper GI endoscopy and also get tested for H.pylori infection to decide further treatment.

Regards,
Dr.R.K.
