Suggest Treatment For Heartburn And Acid Reflux

Posted on Mon, 24 Nov 2014
Question: I have had a hoarse throat since August, 2014. I have not had a cold, flu or any other ailment in the past year or more. I went to my family doctor and she said to try Allegra and she prescribed Flonase. I have been taking them for the last 3 weeks and have had no change. My throat is not sore at all and I do not have any problem eating or swallowing. I am not a smoker. My doctor asked me if I had heartburn or acid reflux. I have never had that.
I have never had this persistent hoarseness before. The people around me that I talk to say they notice the hoarseness when I talk. I am a 71 year old male. What are your recommendations?

Brief Answer:
thyroid problem

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Since you are having hoarse throat since august 2014 and is not having cold or flu, allergies, is a non smoker and is not having heartburn or acid and allegra has caused no change in your symptoms the cause of your persistent hoarseness when talking could be due to thyroid problem.

I would advise you to do blood test for thyroid stimulating hormone(TSH), triiodothyronine(T3) and Thyroxine(T4).

I would also advise you to drink plenty of water, humidify your home, avoid second hand smoke, avoid spicy foods and alcohol and try not to use your voice too long or too loudly.

Does genetics have an influence on my thyroid health? My mother had hers removed at age 40. My sister had hers removed at age 62. Another sister had hers removed at age 65. My daughter had hers removed at age 40. Does thyroid tend to affect women more than men?
What is the urgency in having it looked at? We are going on a cruise at the end of Nov. And would not want to cancel unless it is urgent.
Thank you. XXXX

Brief Answer:
Genetics plays a role

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Genetics play a prominent role in both determination of thyroid hormone and thyrotropin (TSH) concentrations, and susceptibility to autoimmune thyroid disease and has an influence on thyroid health.

Thyroid issues affect women more than men.

It is urgent that you do a blood test for thyroid profile.

Since you are gioing on a cruise at end of november i would advise you to do the test in the first week of november.

If you have no more clarifications then please rate the answer and close the thread.
