Brief Answer:
enlarged prostate

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for contacting HCM

You are concerned about having an enlarged prostate and if you need it removed. You have already tried medication to help reduce the prostate but it has not helped. The question is do you need to have it removed and the answer is only if you are having symptoms. Symptoms of an enlarge prostate would be difficulty starting or ending your stream, having to get up at night to urinate, urinating frequently due to inability to completely empty your bladder. urine incontinence, urge on urination and not being able to reach the bathroom in time, bladder leakage or prostate cancer.

If you have none of these problems then I would not recommend removal of the prostate. Removal of the prostate also has significant complications including erectile dysfunction, continued difficulty urinating and urine incontinence. You must ask very directly to the urologist what are the overall benefits and do they out weight the risks of surgery.

In conclusion having an enlarged prostate does not always need to be removed. You only need it removed if your urinary symptoms that are interfering with you life.
