Suggest Treatment For Dry Cough

default
Posted on Wed, 26 Oct 2016
Question: I started out with a cold a couple of weeks ago - went through all the usual - stuffy nose, head congestion. That gradually went away but now I am left with a nagging, dry cough, that is generally exacerbated by exertion. There appears to be no congestion in my lungs and I sleep soundly all night - no coughing at all. However, I have no stamina. By the end of the day, walking across the room wears me out. I was taking Delsym cough medicine but that gave me raging diarrhea.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for using HCM to post your question.
I read it carefully and I understand your concern

So what I am understanding from your description, it seems like you may have an allergic cough, residual due to a viral infection. Taking an antihistamine helps with making it better. I don't think it will give you diarrhea. You may take Loratadine 10mg or Cetirizine 10mg, 1 tablet once/day. Try it for few days, but you should feel better since the first day.

What worries me its the low stamina. Drinking lots of fluids may help. If at any time you feel shortness of breath, chest pain, the cough its getting worse or you have fever, then we should think of a possible Pneumonia. In this case you will need a course of antibiotics.

If not better, checking your lungs to a doctor for wheezing or crackling will clarify a lot the possible diagnoses of Asthma or Pneumomia. The fact that you sleep well its a good sign. But if you have any of the symptoms mentioned above, please consider it.

Hope this is helpful.
