Suggest Treatment For Dry Cough

default
Posted on Mon, 9 Nov 2015
Question: I have had a dry cough for 5 months. I was originally diagnosed with the 100 day cough or the Brisbane flue which it is called. I had a right hip replacement on the 20th August and I became more breathless after this operation. 2 different doctors treated me for Asthma. However all the medication that I was given did not help at all. I have been given 2 chest X-rays and nothing was found. I then was given a CT scan and an ultra sound which found I had fluid around my heart. I am breathless when I speak. I have no energy to walk a reasonable distance. My Cardiologist does not think that the fluid around my heart would cause the breathlessness and at this stage is reluctant to remove the fluid. He is referring me to a Respiratory Specialist. My medical history includes breast cancer in 2008 and a heart attack resulting in a stent in 2011. Any idea what could be causing this breathlessness and coughing?

Brief Answer:
Get done CT Pulmonary Angiography to rule out Pulmonary embolism.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
By your history and description, there are three possibilities in your case.
1. Pulmonary embolism
2. Congestive heart failure
3. Bronchitis.
Pulmonary embolism is common in cancer survivor patients. So better to get done CT Pulmonary Angiography for the diagnosis of this.
Congestive heart failure (CHF) is common after heart attack and stenting. So get done 2d echo to rule out this.
Bronchitis is common after flu infection. So better to get done PFT (Pulmonary Function Test) for the diagnosis of bronchitis.
So first consult pulmonologist and discuss all these possible causes.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health. Thanks.
