Suggest Treatment For Diverticulitis While On Flagyl And Avelox

default
Posted on Thu, 28 Jan 2016
Question: About 3 weeks ago, I was diagnosed with diverticulitis - needed to be hospitalized for IV Keflex and flagyl after failing Levaquin/Flagyl for 5 days and Avelox for 8 days
I just had a CT Scan which showed mild mesenteric stranding within the right lower quadrant which may represent sequel of residual mild diverticulitis. No fistula or abscess to suggest complication.
I'm still having some pain in this area
How concerned should I be?
I'm still on oral Keflex and flagyl for another 7 days

Brief Answer:
Following advice.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you for asking!
I read your query and understood your concerns.

First of all as long as the CT scan doesn't show any sign of complicated diverticulitis (no abces or bowel fistula) you shouldn't worry for the moment. Actual findings are compatible with mild (uncomplicated) diverticulitis.

Secondly you should continue with antibiotics for another 1or 2 weeks and then you should continue with dietary and lifestyle changes.

If you were my patient I would recommend to do the following dietary and lifestyle changes:
- Eat a liquid diet
- Use prebiotics
- Eat low fibers foods such as Poultry, milk and diary products.
- white rice, pasta and well refined bread

At least once that your symptoms will be improved you may gradually start a more solid diet.

Hope this will be of help!
Wish you health!
Dr. Klerida

You are scaring me when you say "worry for the moment." What does this specifically mean, Dr. Klerida?

I ended up in the ER yesterday due to severe lower right abdominal pain. I had a blood work up all normal and a repeat ct scan which showed that my diverticulitis has resolved despite my pain. Also a GI X-ray series to rule out obstruction also normal

Over the last two days I've noticed that my stools have looked somewhat like coffee grounds or light diarrhea. I've read a bit about the stool coffee ground thing - do I need to be alarmed especially since I just had a normal GI work up?

I read that a long use of antibiotics - been on for one month - can cause this because of the altered probiotic state of my intestines? I just started taking probiotics along with flagy and keflex - still on for one more week

Should I be concerned? Back to the ER?

Brief Answer:
Ovarian issues should be ruled out...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back

You are reporting to have had severe lower abdominal pain and that all the exams show that diverticulitis has resolved.
This is why I suspect that your pain is not related with diverticulitis especially severe pain.
It's true that antibiotic use can cause gut bacterial flora misbalance and diarrhea but not a severe pain ended in ER like at your case.

At this situation I would recommend to consult gynecologist to rule out ovarian issues like cyst. Ovarian issues can mimic your symptoms.

Meantime I suggest to continue probiotics up to 4 weeks and start to use pain killers and anti spastic drugs like Nospa to get relief from abdominal pain.
Hope it was helpful to you!
