Suggest Treatment For Cysts On The Back

Question: I've had boil/cyst/ on back since November last. I am diabetic also and have had trouble keeping bs down, A1c was 12 last done. I was on lantus and insurance stopped covering it. So I went on Levimir (long acting) and Humalog (short acting) had to fight with insurance company to get humalog but they finally approved it. I got type A flue right after Christmas, so I was dealing with subateous cyst, flu and diabetes. I went to dermatologist about cyst and had it drained one to three times a week until about 3 weeks ago. I was not on antiobiotic and it became absessessed. Dermatologist did culture originally and nothing showed, this time he sent to pathologist and it showed gram negative and gram positive with micro organisms. It is taking three weeks to get full final culture report. In meantime he gave me 800 mg cipro 2 x day and 300 mg climaystin 4 x a day, which he tought should cover whatever culture showed. It maintained and was not as red, but swelled up again Friday last and he said he wanted to refer me to Infections Disease Dr. That Dr told him to put me on Bactrim 1 day till all cultures came back. I came back from dr that day and it had started draining, which it never did on its own. My question is that I am allergic to sulfur and was afraid the Batrim would give me problems. I also think since it has finally gone down should i just stay on cipro and climatycin instead of starting another antiobiotic that I'm not sure how I will react. I still feel extremely, extremely tired, have heartburn, which I'm dealing with but no fever. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! I've missed three events and two holidays, I need to get well! I am 65 and weigh 260. Best, TS

Brief Answer:
Do not take the Bactrim as you are allergic to this!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks so much for this query.

I have reviewed your information fully. It is totally forbidden to take bactrim as you are known to be allergic to sulfurs. Please, expressly state this to your doctor.

Probably, bactrim is being considered to compensate for any possible methicillin resistant staphylococcus while waiting on the culture results. If your doctors feel strong about this, they can consider other options which you are not allergic to. Otherwise, stay on the ongoing drugs and wait for the entire culture results.

When an abscess drains, it is good news. I hope yours drain fully as this is the best way of getting germs out of the body.

I wish you well. Feel free to follow up with me.
