Posted on Wed, 21 Oct 2015
Question: I have Parkinson's. I have constipation. I take one dose of miralax nightly. Every few mornings when I go # 2 I get bright blood on my toilet paper. Then 2 to 4 times later, nothing. My stools are soft and I don't strain.

Brief Answer:
Per rectal Bleed Needs evaluation and work up

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. Blood in stools and history of constipation mostly go in favour of haemorrhoids. But other possibilities need to be sorted out too like anal fissure, prolapse, diverticulitis, rectal ulcers, inflammatory bowel diseases like crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, some polyp or God forbid some sinister cause like malignancy.

Nut shell revery per rectal bleed needs evaluation so you get some too. talk to a doctor, let them do a per rectal exam and sort out the cause of it. It will likely come out to be a hard impacted stool due to constipation with or with out haemorrhoid or anal fissure.

You need diet and lifestyle modifications, more fluids intake and more fiber, addition of laxatives and small frequent meals instead of few larges ones to avoid bloating.

I hope it helps. Take good care of yourself and don't forget to close the discussion please.

Well, this a.m. I did a big job and no sign of blood. Do you think this is just strectching my spincher? I do have a hemmorrid out side of my spincher muscle. Could this be the cause of my bleeding once in a while? Here I am 80 and have had a colonoscopy 6 months ago and my Dr. Said I would not need another one.

Brief Answer:
Bleeding per rectum = Haemorrhoids = constipation

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back to me

Yes for sure these bleeding episodes once in awhile are attributed to haemorrhoids and are exacerbated by hard impacted stools of constipation or delaying the defecation or not drinking adequate fluids or taking adequate fiber. With advancing age bowel functions decline as well. So all you can do is take care of the precautions and every thing will be in control. Good bowel and toilet habits will get you through and make sure haemorrhoids don't get engorged too much.

I hope it helps.
